Q: What’s something you wish parents and students knew when they enroll at Mathnasium?
A: You can look up the importance of practice and discipline for any habit and our associated reluctance to do it. Humans (especially human kids) just don't like practice, but the consistency of practice is paramount to success. The only way to get better at math is to practice consistently. Coming 2-3 times every week is the key to improvement. Most parents at some point tell us they wish they had started sooner.
Q: What’s something that surprises most students?
A: Students are most surprised that with good instruction they can be good at math. Most students think they got a bad math gene and that they'll always be bad at math. It's so much fun to watch the progression of confidence that comes with mastery of skills. That confidence seeps into other areas of life too! We most often hear from parents about the difference that confidence makes on the court or field. Kids are more willing to take risks and take the lead.
Q: What’s something that surprises most parents?
A: The most noticeable change initially is the boost in confidence. That confidence really starts to change a student's mindset and they are much more willing to persist in hard things and take risks. Plus, the kids really get to know and love the instructors, so they always have another cheerleader and support for their child. It's so much fun when students come back to tell us they taught their friends and even their teacher a more efficient way to tackle the homework!
Q: Any other insights?
A: Just yesterday, we had a student come in with some pretty tough geometry homework. One instructor couldn't figure the problem out, then another instructor joined in and in just a few minutes, she had almost all of our staff surrounding her. Each instructor giving insight and collaborating on what else to try. She couldn't believe we were stumped too! Rolando came to the rescue and it was such a great experience for her. She was surrounded by support and the knowledge that sometimes, we struggle too.
