1. What is the most common thing you see in new students coming to Mathnasium for the first time?
A: When students first come, they typically hate math because it makes them feel dumb. They are surprised after the assessment that math can actually be fun and easier to understand with good instruction.
2. If there was one thing you could tell parents before they bring their student to Mathnasium what would it be?
A: Most parents wish they had started coming when they first started noticing issues with math and difficulty with homework and tests. I would definitely tell parents to get their child to memorize multiplication facts too.
3. What things do the most successful students have in common?
A: The most successful students come ten times per month, work hard when they are at the center, and ask questions when they do not understand. They also earn a lot of cards and earn prizes pretty quickly.
4. What are some of the ways you teach math to your students?
A: We use a lot of manipulatives to teach math. We use real coins when counting money because most kids do not handle money anymore. Fraction tiles are another great manipulative that helps kids order and compare fractions.
5. What do you think is the coolest thing about Mathnasium?
A: We do Game Nights a few times a year and those are fun because we get to see and interact with the students differently. Playing games helps build relationships with students. Progress checks are always great to do with students because they can see immediately the progress they are making and through hard work, can get skills taken out of their learning plan. One thing that's great about working here is that Michelle provides healthy snacks for us. The fridge is typically stocked with fruit (the oranges are even already peeled), nuts, cheese snacks, and bottled water.
