Q: How do you ensure foundational math concepts are effectively understood by younger students?
Instructor: Just today, I was teaching equivalent fractions and introduced the idea of unity. Once my student understood that 4/4 equals one whole, he understood how 1/4 and 4/16 had the same value. He understood how to multiply both the numerator and denominator by four but couldn't explain why that worked or that he was creating fractions with the same value. This was a big "aha" for him.
Q: What long-term benefits have you observed in students who start building strong math skills early on?
Instructor: The most significant thing I see is kids, who go through our numerical fluency program and finally get off of finger counting, can just see and manipulate numbers so flexibly.
Q: How has learning math at Mathnasium made other subjects or activities easier for you?
Student: Math is really hard for me and now that I am starting to understand it, I feel like I can do hard things. It makes it easier for me to try at least.
Q: What math concept or skill are you most excited to learn because you think it will help you in the future?
Student: Understanding why I am doing order of operations has really helped me to understand the process and why the order matters. If I don't do it in order, I get a different answer. That's the whole point of order of ops.
Q: How has Mathnasium helped your child feel more confident in their math skills and prepared for future challenges?
Parent: She was just telling me the other day that she now helps the other kids in her class. It's helped her to understand not only what she is doing but why she is doing it. She loves helping others see the "Mathnasium" way. Even her teacher has mentioned learning a few things from her.
