Q: What is the first thing a new student would do upon entering Mathnasium?
A: When a new student walks in the door, the first thing they see is their name on the welcome board. One of us is there to greet him, show him the sign-in tablet with the list of instructors, tables, and students, and then we show him the fun calendar, reward cabinet, and this month instead of a wheel, we have a prize drop.
Q: What does the first session look like for new students?
A: On the first session, we get started decorating the binder spine and take a walkthrough of the binder. We set a page goal, which is typically smashed because we don't have a benchmark of her goals yet, and get to work. The first session is all about helping her to see that she can be good at math with good instruction.
Q: Have you seen a student’s attitude towards math change?
A: Nate came in embarrassed about where he was in math and frustrated because he felt like he was the only one not getting it. He didn't know what to ask, so he never raised his hand or asked questions. After six weeks or so, he started to get it and we saw a huge boost in confidence. He started asking us questions about what he was learning in class, and is beginning to feel more confident asking questions when he doesn't understand. He's been here almost a year, and math is a breeze now. This summer, he will move to our enrichment model because he'll be completely caught up to grade level. He wears his 'I love math' shirt almost every session!
Q: What do you wish students and parents knew before they brought their student to your center?
A: Attendance is the key to growth, and if you want to get better, the only way to do that is with intentional practice. We help with homework, which takes a huge load off of both parents and teachers.
