Have you ever wondered what goes on inside Mathnasium of Redwood City?

Jan 13, 2023 | Redwood City

Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Redwood City.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: New students are awed by our selection of toys up high and in the prize cabinets, greeted by friendly faces and a custom built binder with a blank name tag that they are expected to decorate. During this process, we like to ask the students about their three favorite colors and make those colors easily visible to our Center Coordinator who helps students decorate their binders and punch cards.

At the end of each session the new student will find joy in being able to participate in short activities such as answering the problems of the week along with the other students. Giving them a chance to socialize in the last five minutes and get excited to challenge themselves one last time during their session.

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: The comprehensive assessment is a multiple page test taking 1-1.5 hrs for students to finish that helps us identify gaps in knowledge based on grade level. These gaps are then filled with a specific learning plan built for each student to help them get to grade level and above.

Whether a grade behind or a step ahead, these assessments help all of our students stay appropriately challenged with their learning plan.

Q: How often should I bring my student to Mathnasium of Redwood City?

A: We recommend each student attend twice a week to see maximum results. All sessions are an hour long.

Q: Who are the people teaching my child?

A: Our instructors come from a wide range of colleges, universities and high schools. We have a regularly trained team of knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and friendly instructors dedicated to ensuring your student gets one-on-one attention with someone who can help them reach that "a-ha!" moment by getting real-time help in the carefully chosen student binder.

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Redwood City?

A: Students are motivated to complete as many pages as they can per session to reach the Mastery Check and fill up their punch cards. With these punch cards they are encouraged to save up for the larger prizes on display though we have a wide variety of smaller toys, snacks, and puzzles for students to earn.

Each Mastery Check, along with showing us the student has learned a new concept, allows our students to participate in a whole host of activities: getting a raffle ticket; spinning the wheel for a random assortment of prizes; getting a gold star their picture, being dubbed a "Mastery Check Master;" etc.

At the end of each session every student is encouraged to participate in other short activities such as the problems of the week for extra prizes and extra challenge.

The Mathnasium of Redwood City loves to host movie nights and game days where, on occasion, students can earn up for gradually better treats during these events by collectively completing mastery checks and placing stickers on a shared thermometer; building a sense of competition and camaraderie.
