Q1: How does your center keep math learning fun during the summer months?
A: We keep math learning fun during the summer by doing a different STEM activity each week and by doing a summer page challenge. Last year, students were rewarded with ice cream if they met their attendance and page goal. This year, students will be competing with other students in their learning plan level to see who can do the most pages!
Q2: Share a recent success story from your center-could be a student who’s overcome a challenge, earned a reward, or showed great progress!
A: This is hard because we have so many, but three come to mind. 1. Our June $100 for 100 Winner earned her winning ticket on a skill (Multi-Step Problem Solving) that had been giving her trouble since starting with us. She went from needing help with every problem to getting all answers correct without any help. 2. An older student went from no knowledge of their multiplication and division facts to mastering them and consistently using the strategies we taught them. 3. A student was able to finish 10 skills instead of the normal 3 last month because they enrolled in an unlimited plan!
Q3: Why is summer learning important for your students, and how does Mathnasium help prevent the summer slide?
A: Summer learning is important for students because it keeps the brain engaged year-round. It's a great opportunity for students to catch up and review skills they missed during the school year. For example, we have first graders strengthening their addition and subtraction skills before second grade, and third graders honing their multiplication and division skills before fourth grade.
Q4: What’s one thing you love about your students and families at your center?
A: One thing I love about the students and families at our center is how tight-knit everyone is. Students know each other either from before Mathnasium or through making new friends while attending their sessions. They become friends with instructors who are friends with each other. At Mathnasium, we say each student receives a customized learning plan, but at Mathnasium of Roanoke, each student experience truly feels personalized.
