Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Laura has a heart-shaped necklace charm that breaks into two pieces. If the whole charm weighs 51/2 grams and one of the pieces weighs 21/2 grams, then how much does the other piece weigh?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Benjamin and Jerry shared a brie and butter baguette for dinner. Benjamin ate 3/10 of the baguette, and Jerry ate 2/5 of it. The uneaten part of the baguette weighs 1241/2 grams. How many ounces of the baguette did Jerry eat?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Dale orders a cup of coffee that costs $1.50 and a slice of cherry pie that costs $2.50 at the Double R Diner. If the sales tax is 6.5% and Dale tips $1.00, then how much money does he spend at the diner in total?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  A large circular saw at the Packard Sawmill has a radius of 3 decimetres. The edge of the saw’s blade strikes the milled trees at a rate of 9000 decimetres per minute. What is the rate at which the saw rotates in radians per minute?

Grades 5 and 6:   Another difficult task this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Mia S. correctly solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice.
