Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!
Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: Zachary sold books at a yard sale for 15¢ each and toys for $1.00 each. If he sells 6 books and 3 toys, how much money does Zachary make altogether?
Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Eight students are performing songs for their music class recital. Each song is 5 minutes long. If each music student performs 1 song and all 8 students must be done performing by 9:15 PM, then what is the latest time they can start the recital?
Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: A 9-metre tree casts a 6-metre shadow. A songbird casts a 2-centimetre shadow. A squirrel is twice as tall as the songbird. How tall is the squirrel?
Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: The profit earned by a cat-sitting company, measured in thousands of dollars, is modeled by the function f(t) = t2 – 8t + 16, wherein “t” is measured in months and t = 1 is January. During which month does the cat-sitting company earn the least amount of money? How much do they earn?

Grades 5 and 6: Also a much better week of tackling the task solving the problem this past week with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!
