Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Kylie and Layla get on a school bus at 3:15 PM. At 3:23 PM, Layla tells Kylie that they are halfway to her house. How long does it take to get from the school to Layla’s house?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Alice is saving up for a video game that costs $45.00. She gets $20.00 every Monday in allowance, but she spends $15.00 each week on lunch at school. How many weeks will it take for Alice to save up for the video game?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Owen can’t remember the address number of his friend’s house, but he does remember noticing that all four of the digits were even, that they were in order from least to greatest, and that the first two digits form a number with half the value as the number formed by the last two digits. How many possible street address numbers are there with the details Owen remembers?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Bailey sells 21 more chocolate bars than Carlos. Carlos sells 2.5 times as many chocolate bars as Devon. Devon sells as many chocolate bars as Ella. Ella sells a quarter as many chocolate bars as Fran. Fran sells 1 fewer chocolate bars than Ginny. Rewrite these statements into (create) a system of equations.

Grades 5 and 6:   Much better results this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Macie correctly solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Macie! Also solving the problem was Harper, Liam, Saadat, Claire Z. and Alice who will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   An terrific effort and participation this past week with everyone attempting to tackle the task solving the problem!  With so many correct answers, TWO WINNERS were declared with Aarya and Jueon being the first "two" correct ballots to be drawn and they each win a Terrific $10 Gift Card of their choice.
