Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Chloe had an excellent fishing day. She caught 6 snappers, 4 mackerels, 1 grouper, and 1 soggy boot. She threw half the snappers and half the mackerels back into the ocean. How many fish did she take home?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Landon goes to a theme park where ride tokens cost 25¢. A roller coaster ride takes 3 tokens. A ride on the Ferris wheel takes 5 tokens. Landon rides the roller coaster and the Ferris wheel 7 times each. How much money did Landon spend on rides?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  A hamster and a guinea pig are running on wheels. The hamster’s wheel is 16 centimetres in diameter. The guinea pig’s wheel is 48 centimetres in diameter. How much farther does the guinea pig run for each rotation of its wheel?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  It costs $20.00 to rent a jet ski, plus $1.50 for each hour of use, plus the cost of gas. James rents a jet ski for 2 hours. He uses 2750 millilitres of gas, which costs $0.75 per litre. Write an expression to find the total cost of the rental. How much did the jet ski rental cost altogether?

Grades 5 and 6:  A fantastic effort from everyone this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Azmiyah correctly solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Azmiyah!   Also solving the problem was Luoran, Sloan, Kiki, Fiona, Alice and QQ and the will all receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!
