Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!
Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Scarlett and Alice are friends in the same Math class. While the teacher is handing back their tests, Scarlett takes Alice’s math test and won’t tell her the mark she received. Scarlett knows Alice dislikes word problems, so she decides to make a word problem to help her discover her mark. Scarlett says: “I have 2 marks more than you do, and the sum of our marks together is equal to 14.” How much did Scarlett and Alice each get on their Math tests?
Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Maia wants to buy a new jacket. The store Maia visits just increased the price of a jacket she wants by 30%. The store then has a week-long sale and puts all jackets on sale at a discount of 20% off. If the original price of the jacket was $200, what is the final price of the jacket with tax? (Assume the tax rate is 5%)
Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: Everyday, Declan must travel from his home to his college. On Tuesday, Declan sleeps through his alarm, gets out of bed late, and realizes he needs to rush to get to his college. Declan runs at an average speed of 20km/hour to get to his college. Declan arrives exactly 10 minutes late. The next day, Declan’s alarm doesn’t go off and he wakes up late again, deciding he needs to run faster to get to college. Declan runs at an average speed of 25km/hour; but still ends up exactly 4 minutes late. What is the distance between Declan’s house and his college?
