Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Last week, Amber made a lot of scarves to sell. She used 6 different colours, and she made 8 scarves of each colour. Then, she divided up the scarves evenly and shipped them to 3 different stores. How many scarves did each store get?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Lilac earns $9 an hour babysitting. She babysits 5 hours each day, 3 afternoons per week. After babysitting for 9 weeks, how much money will Lilac have earned?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Today is the Callaway Park Fun Festival, and Cooper is volunteering at the balloon stand. When he practiced last night, Cooper made 6 balloon animals in 12 minutes. Cooper signed up for a 3 hour time slot at the balloon stand. If Cooper keeps the same rate, how many balloon animals will he make during the shift?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Jada is watching two storm chasers that are driving towards a lightning strike to capture footage.  Storm Chaser ‘1’ is 5km away and driving at 75 km/hour. Storm Chaser ‘2’ is 10km away and driving at 120 km/hour. Who will arrive first at the location of the lightning strike and by how many minutes?

LAST WEEK WINNERS OF PROBLEM OF THE WEEK:

Grades 3 and 4:   A mighty struggle striving to successfully solve the problem presented at this grade.  Kiki successfully solved the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn.  Well done Kiki, now come and choose a Fabulous $10 Gift Card of your choice.  Everyone try again this week!   Come on, give your brain a workout!

Grades 5 and 6:  Also a tough week and limited participation this past week as everyone worked hard on solving the problem!  Sloan correctly solving the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Sloan!  Also solving the problem was Liam and he will receive "extra punches" on his Reward Card.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!
