Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Lucas had 24 stamps. He sent 4 cards with 2 stamps each. How many stamps does Lucas have left?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:   37.5% of students at Lakeside Elementary School bring their lunch from home instead of buying lunch from the cafeteria. If all of the students at Lakeside Elementary either buy lunch at the cafeteria or bring lunch from home, then what percentage of students at Lakeside Elementary do not bring their lunch from home?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:   Jamie has a number of vegetables in a basket. The ratio of onions to tomatoes in the basket is 2:5, and the ratio of tomatoes to carrots in the basket is 4:3. If there are 15 carrots in the basket, then how many onions are there?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:   Finley uses 37 arcade tokens to play a racing game 5 times and a puzzle game 3 times. Phoebe uses 18 tokens to play each game twice. How many tokens does it take to play the racing game?

Grades 5 and 6:   Our Mathletes at this grade level worked hard to solve the problem posed this past week but if was an extremely difficult task.   Scarlett correctly solved the problem and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Scarlett!   Great effort put forward by everyone!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   A very limited number of submissions this past week to the problem posed.   Leah solved the problem and was the first correct ballot this week to be drawn after managing to solve the problem.  Fantastic work Leah, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Everyone work on the problem again this week!!   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
