Student Spotlight: Meet Jake — Our May Student of the Month (Elementary & Middle School Category!)
At Mathnasium of Center City, every student brings something special to our community—and this month, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Jake, our May Student of the Month in the Elementary & Middle School category!
Jake came to us from a local elementary school and has truly thrived. He’s focused, driven, and always eager to dive into math the moment he walks through our door. Jake is a self-directed learner who earns each and every reward with hard work and determination. He’s also incredibly respectful toward his fellow Mathletes and instructors, and we’ve even seen him step up to welcome new students, offering tours of the center with genuine pride.
We sat down with Jake to learn more about his Mathnasium journey and what keeps him so motivated. Check out our Q&A below!
Q: What was your first impression of Mathnasium?
Jake: It looked cool with all the rewards!
Q: Is there a specific area of math you’re most passionate about right now?
Jake: Multiplication!
Q: Can you tell us about a math problem or concept that you found challenging but rewarding to master? How did you feel once you understood it?
Jake: Some division. Once I got it, I felt really good.
Q: What are some of your future goals related to math?
Jake: [He’s still thinking about this—but we’re sure they’ll be amazing.]
Q: What is your favorite thing about Mathnasium?
Jake: I get to play math games and get rewarded!
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how good of a skier would you say you are?
Jake: 10—actually 9.5! I’ve been skiing since I was two. I get to do jumps and black diamonds with my parents and friends or family.
Q: How did you get so good at Connect 4? Do you think you could win a championship?
Jake: Practice. And yes, I think I could!
Q: What’s your favorite thing to draw?
Jake: Cartoon characters—I like to make them up or imagine new ones.
Last week, while sitting at the front desk, Jake chatted with a potential new student. When asked about his experience at Mathnasium, Jake thought for a moment and said:
“When I arrived here, I felt like I was a 4.5 out of 10 in math. Now I feel like I’m at a 9.5 out of 10.”
Jake, we couldn’t be prouder of you. You’ve shown us what dedication, focus, and a positive attitude can achieve. Thank you for being such a bright part of our Mathnasium family—we love having you here!
