Draw two 10-frames on paper, simple two-by-five grids, and hand your child some coins or buttons. Give them a target number, say 13, and have them fill one frame completely before adding 3 more to the second. Have them say out loud that 13 is 10 and 3. That verbal step locks in the fact as much as the counting does.
