Why perspective matters more than hard work alone
Many parents assume the essential ingredients for maths success are hard work, practice and perseverance. Those matter. But at Mathnasium Edinburgh South we think there's something even more important: perspective.
You may have seen our latest Get Ahead campaign online and on social media, children in smart new uniforms, ready for the start of term. A classic back to school image, with one difference: each child is wearing a pair of bold, bright red glasses, representing a new way of seeing maths as part of the world around them.
What does "getting ahead" in maths actually mean?
For us, it starts with a shift in perspective, helping pupils see things differently, so maths becomes something to engage with rather than a subject to be feared or endured.
When a child struggles with maths, it rarely stays contained to the subject itself. It can affect self belief, create anxiety around learning and in some cases even affect how a child feels about school attendance altogether.
The reverse is just as true. When children begin to genuinely understand a concept and experience real success, their confidence grows and we see this every day at our maths learning centre in Morningside. Our rewards cabinet has needed refilling all summer and our brag board has been full, as we've celebrated the wins along the way.
How does understanding maths build confidence beyond the classroom?
As children begin to understand maths more deeply, they develop skills that reach far beyond the subject itself, approaching problems logically, thinking critically and becoming more confident in finding their own solutions.
