How We Build Maths Fluency

A strong understanding of maths is essential throughout primary school and beyond. We help children develop maths fluency by breaking concepts down into clear, manageable steps that are easy to understand and build on over time.
Through personalised instruction, children gain confidence, accuracy and a deeper understanding of how maths works — not just how to get the answer.

Mathnasium Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does it mean if a child is working below the expected level in maths?

A child who is working below the expected level may not yet have developed all the maths skills typically expected for their age or school stage. This can sometimes make it harder for them to keep up in lessons, which may affect confidence and enjoyment of maths.

With the right support and approach, these gaps can be addressed and confidence rebuilt over time.

  • How can I tell if my child might need extra support with maths?

Every child learns at their own pace, but some signs that a child may benefit from additional maths support include:

    • Ongoing difficulty with homework or classwork
    • Frustration or anxiety during maths lessons
    • Results that are lower than expected for their age or school stage
    • Gaps or inconsistencies in understanding key maths concepts
    • Avoidance of maths-related activities
    • Low confidence when working with numbers

Understanding where a child is starting from can help identify both strengths and areas for development, allowing support to be tailored appropriately.

  • Do you support children who are confident or working ahead in maths?

Yes. Some children benefit from additional challenge and enrichment in maths. We support confident learners by extending their understanding, encouraging deeper thinking and exploring maths topics beyond the classroom, while still ensuring learning remains enjoyable and well balanced.

  • How can I help my child prepare for the transition from primary to secondary maths?

As children move towards secondary school, it’s helpful for them to feel confident with core maths skills. This includes:

    • Solving multi-step word problems
    • Reading and interpreting graphs
    • Working confidently with fractions and mixed numbers
    • Comparing and ordering decimals
    • Understanding basic ratios and percentages
    • Using negative numbers

Building confidence in these areas can help children approach the transition to secondary maths feeling prepared and capable.

  • Do Mathnasium's primary school tutors help with maths homework?

Yes. Time can be set aside within sessions to support children with maths homework, helping them understand the work rather than simply completing it. This ensures homework reinforces learning rather than becoming a source of stress.

  • How does my child get started with maths support at Mathnasium?

    Getting started is straightforward:

    1. Find your local centre – Contact your nearest Mathnasium centre to learn more about available support.
    2. Arrange an assessment – This helps identify your child’s current understanding and learning needs.
    3. Begin sessions – A personalised programme is created to support your child’s progress and confidence over time.
  • What happens during the initial assessment at Mathnasium?

At Mathnasium, we understand that assessments can sometimes feel stressful for students, so we designed ours to make students feel comfortable and confident from the get-go. We start by building rapport with students, giving them a short centre tour and setting expectations.

We conduct both a verbal and written assessment to understand how each student approaches and thinks about maths. This also helps us identify their strengths, areas for improvement and goals to create a learning plan personalised to their unique needs.

  • Which curriculum does Mathnasium use to teach primary school maths?

Mathnasium does not follow a single school curriculum in the traditional sense. Instead, we use our own structured teaching approach, known as the Mathnasium Method™, which is designed to support and complement what children are learning at school.

Each child follows a personalised learning plan based on their individual needs. This allows us to focus on building understanding, confidence and fluency in maths, while reinforcing the concepts taught in the classroom.
Our approach helps children make sense of maths step by step, developing a strong foundation that supports progress through the primary years and beyond.

  • What primary school maths topics are covered in sessions?

We support children across the full range of primary school maths topics, including:

    • Addition and subtraction
    • Multiplication and division
    • Fractions
    • Decimals
    • Percentages

Support is always tailored to the child’s current understanding, helping to fill gaps, strengthen foundations or provide additional challenge where appropriate.
