Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where in the West Midlands can I find Mathnasium centres?

We have centres across the West Midlands and surrounding areas, including King's Heath, Northfield, Bromsgrove, Lichfield & Tamworth, Coventry, Worcester, North Oxford and Milton Keynes East.

If you’re unsure which centre is closest, use the “Find a Centre” feature on our website or contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction.

  • Do you help with the West Midlands 11+ exams?

Yes, absolutely. The 11+ is one of the most common reasons West Midlands families come to us, particularly in areas where selective grammar and independent schools are popular, such as Birmingham, Coventry, Lichfield and surrounding West Midlands communities.

West Midlands 11+ papers are set by GL Assessment, CEM or individual schools and can include numerical reasoning, arithmetic and non-verbal reasoning. Our instructors follow bespoke plans built around the specific paper your child will sit.

  • What age groups do you work with?

We work with children from Reception through to Year 11 (ages 4–16).

Each child's sessions are tailored to exactly where they are right now: early number work, 11+ preparation or GCSE revision.

  • What maths topics can you cover?

Our West Midlands maths instructors cover all topics across the National Curriculum for Mathematics in England, from early primary through to GCSE. This includes:

    • Number sense, place value and counting fluency

    • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

    • Fractions, decimals and percentages

    • Ratio, proportion and rates of change

    • Algebra, equations and expressions

    • Geometry, measurement and statistics

  • Do you teach primary school maths in your West Midlands centres?

    Absolutely!

At primary level, our West Midlands centres support children in KS1 and KS2 (Years 1–6) with foundational skills including place value, the four operations, fractions and problem-solving.

We also help children prepare for KS1 SATs (Year 2), the Multiplication Tables Check (Year 4) and KS2 SATs (Year 6), as well as 11+ preparation for those sitting entrance exams for selective secondary schools.

  • How do you work with students who are finding maths difficult or losing confidence?

We start with a free diagnostic assessment, which tells us exactly where their knowledge gaps are. It is when these gaps started forming that your child’s confidence and attitude towards maths probably started changing.

From there, we build a tailored learning plan that goes back to fill those gaps before moving forward, so your child builds a solid understanding of the maths while keeping up in class. As their understanding deepens and skills grow, students become more confident, curious and motivated to engage with the subject.

We support students in KS3 (Years 7–9) through to GCSE (Years 10–11).

  • Do you offer GCSE maths preparation in the West Midlands?

Absolutely! Our West Midlands centres provide focused GCSE maths preparation for students in Years 10 and 11.

Our instructors use bespoke learning plans to identify and address knowledge gaps, solidify understanding of maths topics and build exam technique.

We support all three main GCSE maths awarding bodies, AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, and tailor preparation to the specification your child is studying.

  • What curriculum do you use at Mathnasium?

Rather than following a traditional curriculum, we build tailored learning plans, and that is the foundation of our proprietary teaching approach, the Mathnasium Method™.

This proven, proprietary approach is designed to help students develop a deep understanding of maths by identifying their knowledge gaps and expanding their mathematical thinking gradually from there so they may build solid foundations for long-term success in the classroom and beyond.

Our approach combines customised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to transform how students think and feel about maths.

  • Do you follow the National Curriculum?

Our bespoke learning plans are built around each student's individual needs rather than a fixed curriculum.

That said, our instructors can absolutely align instruction with the National Curriculum for Mathematics in England where that's what a family wants, ensuring students stay in step with their year group at school.

We can also tailor instruction for students following the International Baccalaureate or IGCSE programmes.

The plan follows the student, not the other way around.

  • Can Mathnasium help improve maths test scores?

Our maths instructors in the West Midlands can help children improve their school grades and prepare for specific assessments, including SATs, the 11+ and GCSE maths.

With regular attendance and a focused learning plan, students report significant improvements in both their test results and their day-to-day confidence in maths.

  • Do your West Midlands maths tutors help with homework?

Yes! While we do not set homework ourselves, we set aside time during each session to help students work through their school assignments.

All learning takes place under the guidance of our specially trained instructors. We never send children away with extra work to do at home.

  • Is online tutoring the same as coming into a centre?

Absolutely. Your child receives the same live, customised instruction from our specially trained instructors, following the same tailored learning plan, whether they attend a West Midlands learning centre or join online through Mathnasium@home. The format is flexible; the quality of teaching stays the same.

  • What does Mathnasium cost?

Mathnasium provides premium value by combining a superior learning experience with an efficient structure that keeps costs low. There is a flat enrolment fee for our programme and students attend regularly, much like a gym membership.

We recommend that they attend Mathnasium 2-3 times per week, but the exact number typically depends on students’ skill levels and knowledge gaps. Pricing varies by programme and area. Following the diagnostic assessment, we will recommend a session plan tailored to your child's learning needs and goals. Contact your local centre for more details on available packages.

  • Why is a diagnostic assessment needed before enrolment?

The diagnostic assessment helps us understand exactly where your child is on their maths journey, including their strengths and any knowledge gaps.

From those insights, we build a tailored learning plan designed to put them on the most effective path to maths mastery. The assessment is welcoming and conversational, designed to help us get to know your child.

  • What happens after the initial assessment at Mathnasium?

We use the results to build a learning plan tailored to your child’s current skill level and academic goals. That plan is designed to:

    • Address any knowledge gaps

    • Strengthen foundational skills

    • Introduce new concepts gradually and effectively

Your child begins working on this plan right away with guidance from our specially trained instructors. We monitor progress consistently and adjust the plan as needed to ensure they keep moving forward.

  • How many sessions per week does Mathnasium recommend?

We usually recommend 2 to 3 sessions per week. However, the centre may suggest a different frequency depending on your child’s goals and the time available before any upcoming assessments or exams.

  • How do I enrol my child at a Mathnasium centre in the West Midlands?

The enrolment process at Mathnasium in the West Midlands is straightforward:

    1. Find your nearest West Midlands centre and get in touch, even if your child will be attending online.

    1. Schedule a free assessment so we can identify any knowledge gaps and build a tailored learning plan with guidance from our specially trained maths instructors.

    1. Schedule your sessions. Your local Centre Director will help you find a timetable that works for your family and guide you through the enrolment process.
