At Mathnasium of Muswell Hill, our specially trained instructors use the Mathnasium Method™ to build a complete, connected picture of maths for each child. This proprietary teaching approach combines personalised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to help students develop a deep understanding of maths.
Muswell Hill is a neighbourhood where academic ambitions run high across a wide range of schools, from outstanding state primaries to selective independents and high-performing comprehensives. Whatever a family’s goal, the Mathnasium Method™ gives children the mathematical depth to meet it.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Year 1 through to GCSE at our centre on Fortis Green Road, just down from Gail’s Bakery and up from The Village Green pub, and online via Mathnasium@home.
Muswell Hill draws children from an unusually wide range of schools across N10, N2 and N6. Our instructors are familiar with the maths expectations and exam requirements of many of the schools in the area, and experienced in supporting children whose goals range from 11+ preparation and Maths Olympiad to GCSE target grades and everyday school confidence.
Every child at Mathnasium of Muswell Hill starts with a diagnostic assessment that gives us a precise picture of where they excel and where they need support. From there, we build a personalised learning plan with a clear path forward. As the child progresses through their plan, we adjust it, accelerating where they are ready to move faster, consolidating where something needs more time.
The result is a programme that grows with the child rather than running on a fixed schedule. Most children find that maths starts to feel more manageable within a few weeks, and that the progress they make here feeds directly into how they perform at school.
Maths Tutors Near You
Mathnasium of Muswell Hill is a maths-only learning centre specialising in personalised instruction that delivers results. We proudly serve families across N10, N2 and N6, including:
Specially Trained and Caring Team
Martin Heaton Cooper
Centre Director
After 30 years in Broadcasting, Advertising & Media culminating in Martin running Discovery Communications UK & Ireland as their Chief Operating Office, he decided to change direction. Martin has always been a strong believer in the importance of maths in all walks of life, so it is perhaps not surprising that his roles in media have always required a good understanding of numbers. Martin has lived in North London for the past 25 years & has two children with his wife Kate who is a coach, tutor, and RADA trained actor. Martin and Kate also own Mathnasium of Crouch End and will aim to replicate the high standards of teaching for kids in Muswell Hill.
Alizay
Centre Manager
Alizay began working at Mathnasium of Crouch End when it first opened in 2018 as a Maths Instructor. She then went on to study Psychology at the University of Warwick, where she developed a strong interest in Developmental Psychology and Educational Psychology. After graduating in 2022, she moved on to study Clinical Neuroscience at UCL where she worked in a lab researching neural connections in epilepsy. Throughout her studies, Alizay continued to work part time as a Maths Instructor, teaching online and returning to the Centre during university holidays. In 2023, she returned full-time to Mathnasium Muswell Hill, and was promoted to Assistant Manager. She was very pleased to start as Centre Manager for Muswell Hill in August 2025, bringing with her a range of experience in both education and neuroscience.
Milly
Head of Education
Milly studied animal science and worked as a vet nurse for 2 years, but she has always loved maths and thinks that it is the foundation of all knowledge and all life. In her spare time she plays the piano, paints and reads books about maths & mathematicians through the ages. Before working at Mathnasium, Milly spent a year in South Africa caring for injured wildlife, but eventually wanted a more challenging and mentally stimulating occupation. She finds teaching children really rewarding and loves to see them developing a true understanding & enjoyment of maths.
Remi
Centre Manager (Crouch End)
Remi studied International Business, Economics and Politics with an emphasis on accounting at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo. Whilst living in Japan, she deepened her appreciation of maths as it was integral to her earlier career development. Working in the financial services' software industry, Remi supported and educated clients in their usage and understanding of the financial modelling the maths engine provided and developed internal communication workflows and content creation capabilities.
Remi settled in North London eleven years ago, and her two children happily attend school in Muswell Hill. She loves to help and watch her elder child's growth in his love for the subject and become the sweetest numeracy mentor to his younger sister. But most of all, Remi loves engaging in the community for the direct benefit of the children. She is passionate about creating a fun, engaging and inspiring environment that empowers our Mathnasium students with the twin tools of numeracy and problem solving that are so valuable to have in life. She also enjoys yoga.
Phillip
Lead Instructor
Philip studied maths, statistics and operational research at the University of Manchester and then worked for 15 years as a City Trader and then 15 years working for a large American IT company. For the last part of his professional life Philip wanted to try something completely different and as he loves maths, teaching and helping kids, Mathnasium ticked all his boxes. He is now enjoying the most fulfilling part of his career.
Elsie
Lead Instructor
Elsie is studying Maths, Biology, Chemistry, and Music at an A level and hopes to do medicine at the University of Oxford. She loves being an instructor, especially when she sees kids find math as exciting and engaging as she does. Seeing the change in their faces when they understand a new concept may be the most rewarding part of working at Mathnasium. They also make her laugh!
Darcey
Instructor
Darcey is studying Maths, Physics, and Economics at A Level. She enjoys F1, baking, and reading. Her goal is to go to the University of Warwick. She finds Mathnasium a great place to help people, spread the love of maths, and simply enjoy anything related to teaching, maths, and people. Darcey's sister also attends Mathnasium.
Whether they would like to attend sessions in-centre or online, students can take 3 easy steps to enrol at Mathnasium.
All students begin their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that pinpoints what they already know and what they still need to learn.

Mathnasium of Muswell Hill works with children from Year 1 through to GCSE, children aged 5 to 16, covering Key Stages 1 through to KS4.
Muswell Hill has an exceptionally varied secondary school landscape. Fortismere School is one of the most sought-after state comprehensives in North London; Alexandra Park School draws children from a wide catchment; and independent schools such as Channing attract families from across N10 and beyond.
We work with children at every stage of the journey through this landscape, from early primary maths right through to Year 11 GCSE preparation.
Our instructors cover the full primary and secondary maths curriculum: number, arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percentages, algebra, geometry, ratio and proportion, statistics, probability and trigonometry, from KS1 through to KS4.
For children working towards the 11+ or Maths Olympiad, sessions extend into mathematical reasoning, multi-step problem-solving and the kind of creative thinking these assessments reward. As with all our teaching, the content is guided entirely by each child’s personalised learning plan.
With private tutoring, what gets covered each week tends to depend on what the child needs help with at that moment.
At Mathnasium support is much more structured, consistent, and focused on the long-term goal of building maths mastery. Every child starts their Mathnasium experience with a diagnostic assessment, and their sessions are shaped by a personalised learning plan built specifically around their knowledge gaps, not just the topics that happened to come up in homework that week.
Our instructors follow the Mathnasium Method™, used across 1,200+ centres worldwide, so every session connects logically to the one before. Progress accumulates. Sessions take place in a supportive small-group setting that children enjoy, and because the instruction is always personalised, each child is challenged at exactly the right level.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach, and not a standard curriculum. Our approach combines personalized learning plans with proven teaching techniques to promote deep understanding over memorization. It is developed to help students build solid foundations for maths mastery, transforming how they think and feel about the subject.
Our instructors draw on mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written approaches, all guided by each child’s personalised learning plan. When needed, we can align sessions with the National Curriculum so school learning is reinforced, while building the deeper understanding that takes children beyond it.
We work with children of all skill levels, whether they are looking to catch up or keep up, or are ready to get ahead in their maths class.
Many of the children who come to us are already doing well at school and want to go further, whether that means building confidence, preparing for selective school entry, or reaching their full potential in exams.
For high-achievers, we extend their learning into harder problem-solving, sharper reasoning and greater mathematical fluency.
For children who are struggling or have developed gaps over time, we go back to the point where their understanding is secure and work forward from there, methodically, without pressure, at a pace that builds real confidence.
Yes! Mathnasium of Muswell Hill supports students preparing for 11+ entrance assessments.
Solid 11+ maths preparation is about more than covering the curriculum. It requires speed, accuracy and the ability to reason through multi-step problems. We recommend starting in Year 4 or early Year 5, and we build a programme that develops all three.
Yes, Mathnasium of Muswell Hill supports children entering UKMT Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges and Olympiad rounds. Competition maths is a different discipline from school maths. It rewards ingenuity, careful reasoning and the ability to find a route through problems that sometimes have no obvious method.
We find that children who pursue Olympiad preparation alongside their regular sessions develop a quality of mathematical thinking that benefits everything else they do: their GCSE work becomes more fluent, their 11+ reasoning sharper, and their general confidence in tackling hard problems grows considerably.
Yes, our instructors support Year 10 and Year 11 students with personalised GCSE preparation plans built around their current grade, target and the specific topics that need the most attention. We cover the complete GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability and statistics.
Many students in Muswell Hill are aiming for the highest grades, particularly those heading to sixth forms with demanding entry requirements at Fortismere, Channing or further afield. We help them get there with a plan that is focused, efficient and built around what they individually need.
Yes. We support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs maths papers, working through both the Arithmetic and Reasoning components with a personalised plan targeting each child’s specific areas of difficulty. We also support Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check.
Mathnasium of Muswell Hill operates on a flat monthly membership fee. Most children attend two to three sessions per week.
We will recommend a session plan tailored to your child's learning needs and goals, following their diagnostic assessment.

The assessment is where we start. It gives us an accurate picture of your child's maths and everything we need to build their personalised learning plan.
Once that's done, we walk you through the results and the plan we've put together, and make sure all your questions are answered before your child's first session.
