How We Help Students Excel in Maths

Our instructors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach that combines personalised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to build maths knowledge level by level.

This method ensures that each student receives tailored instruction that meets their unique needs and learning styles. By focusing on understanding fundamental concepts and developing critical thinking skills, our approach helps students build a strong mathematical foundation.

Our dedicated and specially trained maths tutors offer personalised face-to-face instruction in a supportive and engaging environment. We work with students of all skill levels, both in-centre and online, to help them achieve maths mastery.

FAQ

Mathnasium Wokingham Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Mathnasium cost?

Mathnasium provides premium value by combining a superior learning experience with an efficient structure that keeps costs low. There is a flat enrolment fee for our programme, and students attend regularly—much like a gym membership. We recommend that they attend Mathnasium 2-3 times per week as attending less frequently will slow results and attending too often could lead to student burnout. Pricing varies by programme and geographic area. Contact our centre for more details on enrolment packages.

  • Can you help my child with the 11+ or entrance exam or other test prep?

We can help all the way through to GCSE, including whatever tests come up in that time. Test Prep is a specific learning goal that’s addressed through individualised targeting of gaps in foundational knowledge, careful analysis of errors to provide the right materials at the right time and improved computational fluency to improve both competence and accuracy in test taking. Improvements in number sense and problem-solving are addressed as students learn to apply what they know out of context, recognising why numbers are being used and developing their reasoning capability.

  • What makes Mathnasium different from a maths class?

Unlike a maths class, Mathnasium teaches to the individual. Each child is given a comprehensive assessment that pinpoints their exact strengths and weaknesses and a customised learning plan based on their specific learning goals. Our expert instructors provide face-to-face instruction at the right pace for each child.

  • Is Mathnasium for advanced students or struggling students?

We empower students of all skill levels to excel in maths, whether they are looking to catch up, keep up, or get ahead on their maths journey.

We work with advanced students to expand their maths skills and help them achieve their greatest potential. At Mathnasium, advanced students can explore subjects beyond their school’s maths curriculum and receive personalised support to achieve their unique academic goals.

If a student is struggling or simply looking to keep up in their maths class, Mathnasium will build upon what they already know, addressing their learning gaps and teaching maths in a way that makes sense to them.

  • What kind of results does Mathnasium get?

Children who consistently attend our learning centres enjoy a transformative learning experience and make huge strides in the classroom. Multiple independent studies have found Mathnasium to improve student performance on standards-based tests in 20 sessions or fewer.

  • How often does my child need to attend Mathnasium?

We recommend 2-3 times a week until learning goals are met and parents are satisfied with what their child has accomplished.

  • What if I can't take my child to a centre twice each week?

We realise that with busy family schedules, sometimes it can be hard getting your child to the centre twice a week. That's why we offer flexible scheduling as well as our online option—Mathnasium@home—to make it easier to attend weekly sessions. If your child is still unable to attend, they won't miss anything because we work at their pace and will simply meet them where they are at during their next session.

  • What do you do ... and what is the Mathnasium Method™?

Our mission is to teach children maths so that they understand it, master it and love it. We use careful assessment to meet a child exactly where they are at and teach maths in a way that makes sense to them.

  • Do you give homework to students?

No. All learning occurs under the efficient and effective guidance of our trained instructors. Adding homework would risk frustration and overload. In fact, we'll set aside some time each session to help your student with their school homework.

  • What happens during the initial assessment at Mathnasium?

At Mathnasium, we understand that assessments can sometimes feel stressful for students. That’s why we take a personalised and engaging approach to each assessment. We start by building rapport with your child, giving them a short centre tour, and setting expectations.

We conduct both a verbal and written assessment to identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement as well as to gain a true understanding of how each student approaches and thinks about maths. More importantly, our assessments don’t feel like a test – we use fun interactive methods to ensure your child feels comfortable and confident.

  • What type of questions are on the assessment?

We carefully craft our assessment questions to evaluate specific skills that are critical for success in maths. Our assessments cover a wide range of maths skills and concepts, including grade-level or subject-specific skills, number sense, and concepts unique to Mathnasium.

We use a combination of verbal and written questions, and it's possible that some of the questions may cover topics your child hasn't yet learned in school. Our goal is to get a comprehensive understanding of your child's current maths abilities, so we can create a personalised learning plan that meets their unique needs and goals.

  • Do you accept childcare vouchers?

We don’t accept childcare vouchers but contact your local centre to see whether they are running any promotional offers at the moment.

  • What maths classes can your tutors teach?

Our caring, specially trained tutors work with primary and secondary school students of all skill levels looking to learn and master any maths up to Higher Tier GCSE Maths or National 5 Qualifications.
