At Mathnasium of Whetstone, our specially trained instructors use the Mathnasium Method™ to help children build a deep and lasting understanding of maths. This proprietary teaching approach combines personalised learning plans with mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques, giving every student the focused instruction they need rather than a one-size-fits-all lesson.
North London’s mix of selective state schools, independent prep schools and competitive 11+ catchments means that maths foundations matter from an early age. The Mathnasium Method™ is built to lay them.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Reception through to GCSE at our centre and online via Mathnasium@home. Each child can learn at their own pace following their own personalised learning plan to ensure every session is purposeful and accessible at the appropriate level. Sessions take place in a supportive environment amongst other students so that children enjoy attending and perceive as a “maths club.”
Whetstone sits close to some of North London’s most sought-after independent and grammar schools, and our instructors have extensive experience helping children prepare for 7+, 11+, 12+ and 13+ entrance assessments alongside their broader maths development.
Every student begins their Mathnasium experience with a diagnostic assessment, so that we can get to know them, how they approach maths, and what their learning needs are.
From there, we build a personalised learning plan that keeps children progressing at the right pace, closing knowledge gaps, building on existing strengths and developing the problem-solving skills that carry through every stage of school maths.

Specially Trained and Caring Team
James Land
Owner
James is an experienced Mathnasium Multi-Centre Owner, overseeing the Whetstone, Barnet, and St Albans centres. He is passionate about creating high-quality learning environments where students can develop strong mathematical foundations, build confidence, and recognise the opportunities that a strong understanding of Maths can provide.
James holds a Master’s degree in Engineering from Durham University, giving him a strong technical and mathematical foundation. He later qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked at MHA MacIntyre Hudson, specialising in audit, accounts, and corporate finance. His background across engineering, mathematics, and finance has given him a strong appreciation of the importance of analytical thinking and problem-solving.
Having struggled with Maths himself as a child, James understands how important it is for students to properly understand the principles behind the subject rather than simply memorising methods. This personal experience drives his commitment to helping children develop the confidence to tackle challenging problems and realise their academic potential.
Outside of Mathnasium, James is a keen sportsman. He enjoys watching rugby, particularly when England are winning, and continues to battle his age in a 5-a-side football league.

Mathnasium of Whetstone works with children from Reception through to GCSE, children aged 4 to 16, covering all Key Stages from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to KS4.
North London has a wide range of selective secondary schools, both independent and state, and many local families are navigating 11+, 12+ or 13+ entry alongside keeping pace with an ambitious primary or secondary curriculum. We work with students at every stage of that journey.
Our instructors cover the full range of primary and secondary maths curriculum, from early number and arithmetic through to algebra, geometry, ratio, trigonometry, probability and statistics at GCSE and iGCSE level.
We support children at every Key Stage from KS1 through to KS4, as well as the numerical reasoning and problem-solving skills tested in selective school entrance assessments.
Every child works from a personalised learning plan, so sessions focus on the exact topics they need.
Mathnasium of Whetstone works differently from a typical tutoring arrangement. Sessions are shaped by a personalised learning plan built around their individual knowledge gaps and goals, not just whatever topic came up in class that week.
Our instructors follow the Mathnasium Method™, a structured and consistent teaching approach used across 1,200+ centres worldwide, so progress is cumulative and planned rather than reactive.
Sessions take place in our learning centre alongside other students, but children are never taught as a class or expected to work through the same lesson together, which many children find more engaging than isolated one-to-one tutoring and which helps build the maths confidence that carries into the classroom and the exam room.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach, not a traditional curriculum. This approach combines personalised learning plans with proven teaching techniques to promote deep understanding over memorisation and help children to think in the ways high-achieving math students would naturally think. It is developed to help students build solid foundations for maths mastery, transforming how they think and feel about the subject.
Our instructors draw on mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques, guided throughout by each child’s personalised learning plan. Sessions can align with the National Curriculum so that children are reinforcing what they cover at school, while also addressing gaps that tend to build up over time and that entrance assessments and GCSEs are designed to expose.
We work with primary and secondary school students of all skill levels.
Advanced learners, including children preparing for selective school entry, can explore topics beyond the standard curriculum, developing the problem-solving depth, speed and accuracy that 11+, 12+ and 13+ entrance papers reward. We also have many students who might not be preparing for entrance exams but love how the Mathnasium programme is able to challenge them and develop their problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
For students who need to catch up or rebuild confidence, we start from a secure point in their existing knowledge and move forward from there, closing gaps carefully so that every new topic lands properly.
Yes! Mathnasium of Whetstone supports students preparing for the 11+ and other selective entrance sessions, including 7+, 12+ and 13+.
We recommend beginning 11+ preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5 to allow sufficient time to address knowledge gaps and build the consistent performance these papers demand. For 12+ and 13+ entry, we tailor preparation to the specific demands of the schools and papers involved.
Yes. Our instructors work with Year 10 and Year 11 students on personalised GCSE and iGCSE preparation plans built around their current grade, target and the topics that need the most attention. We cover the complete GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability and statistics.
A number of local independent schools use the iGCSE rather than the standard GCSE, and our instructors are experienced in supporting both. For students in selective or independent school environments where GCSE expectations are particularly high, we help them meet that bar with a focused and efficient plan.
Yes. We support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs maths papers, working across both the Arithmetic and Reasoning papers with a personalised plan focused on each child’s specific areas of difficulty. The goal is to build real accuracy and confidence ahead of exam season rather than relying on last-minute cramming.
We also support Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check and Year 2 children working towards their KS1 teacher assessments.
Yes, Mathnasium of Whetstone offers online maths tutoring during holiday periods through Mathnasium@home, our live, face-to-face online tutoring option.
Sessions are delivered in real time by our specially trained instructors and follow the same personalised learning plan as in-centre sessions, so children receive consistent, structured support wherever they are.
Mathnasium of Whetstone operates on a flat monthly membership fee, with several options depending on your child’s needs and goals.
Following the diagnostic assessment, we will recommend a session schedule tailored to their personalised learning plan. Most children attend two to three sessions per week.
Use the Contact Us button on this page, call us on 0208 090 4605, or email [email protected] to get in touch. We will arrange a diagnostic assessment at a convenient time as the first step to understanding your child’s current skill level and learning needs.
After the assessment, we will walk you through the results and the personalised learning plan we have put together for your child and answer any questions before their first session.
