Want to help your child get ahead? It’s time to see maths from a new perspective. With just a few weeks of the summer holidays left, we’re talking to lots of Edinburgh families about the new school year, and the best way to help their children succeed in maths when they return to the classroom. And while many see the essential ingredients as hard work, practice and perseverance, at Mathnasium Edinburgh South we think there’s something even more important: perspective. You may have seen our latest campaign online and on social media, showing children in smart new uniforms ready for the start of the new term - a classic image. But there’s something a little different - each child is wearing a pair of bold, bright red glasses, to represent a new way of seeing maths as part of the world around us. We’re focused on helping every child get ahead, starting with a shift in perspective to help our pupils see things differently and to view maths not as a subject to be feared or endured. When a child struggles with maths, we know that it can affect more than just their academic performance, impacting their self-belief and creating anxiety around learning or even around school attendance. Conversely, when children begin to truly understand concepts and experience success, their confidence grows - we see this every day in our maths learning centre in Morningside. Our rewards cabinet has had to be refilled throughout the summer and our brag board is full as we celebrate the wins along the way. As children begin to understand maths more deeply, they develop skills that influence many aspects of everyday life, learning to approach problems logically, thinking critically about problems and becoming more confident in finding solutions. This confidence then spreads, with children becoming more willing to tackle challenges, ask questions and embrace new opportunities. They develop resilience and a real belief in their own ability to learn, improve and succeed. This is what we see as getting ahead - not just measured in exam success or achieving the next grade but in the doors that a strong foundation in maths opens for our young people. By helping children build a mindset to think differently, they’ll approach challenges more confidently and continue learning and progressing.
