The Eleven Plus (11+), administered in Kent via the GL Assessment Kent Test, is the entrance exam used by all 32 Kent grammar schools to select students for Year 7.

Registration for the 11+ opens on 1st June and closes on 1st July. The exam is sat in early September at the very start of Year 6.
The maths section is delivered alongside English in a combined GL Assessment paper.
Your child will have 25 minutes to work through around 25 multiple-choice questions, preceded by a short 5-minute practice exercise to help them settle in.
The questions draw on Key Stage 2 maths up to early Year 6 level, with a focus on mental arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, perimeter, area and multi-step word problems.
Results are released in mid-October. This gives families their child's standardised score just ahead of the national secondary school application deadline on 31st October.
Because the test falls right at the start of Year 6, almost all maths preparation needs to happen across Year 5.

Even when we mean well, several subtle factors can easily turn everyday 11+ practice into a source of friction for both you and your child:
A shift in role: When you move between being a parent and being an exam coach within the same evening, it blurs a relationship the child relies on for reassurance. A child who is used to a parent as a source of comfort can find it unsettling when that same person starts marking their work and correcting their mistakes.
The fear of letting a parent down: Research into exam stress and test anxiety shows that when children feel the pressure to meet parents’ expectations, anxiety tends to rise. An hour-long revision session asks for more focus than most children in Year 5 can sustain, and the last twenty minutes are usually where the arguments start.
In one classroom study on spaced learning, primary‑age children who received short lessons spaced out over time remembered and generalised new material better than peers who covered the same content in longer, massed sessions.
To keep revision calm and effective, our recommendation is to structure home practice into a 20-minute, three-part routine:
5 minutes on a confidence-booster: Start with a topic your child has already mastered, like quick-fire times tables or basic place value. Beginning with success reduces anxiety and puts their brain in a positive, receptive state.
10 minutes on a specific knowledge gap: Focus on a single area that needs attention, such as converting mixed fractions or solving multi-step word problems. Keep explanation brief and focus on working through one or two examples together.
5 minutes on a fun, mixed review: Finish on a high note with a quick mental maths game, a non-verbal reasoning puzzle, or a topic they enjoy. By ending on a positive note, you help the session wrap up without frustration.
Additionally, keeping sessions at the same time of day also helps establish a smooth routine. Before school or mid-afternoon tends to work better than squeezing revision in after a full day when patience on both sides is already running low.
If you hand the mark scheme directly to your child or use a self-marking app, you instantly step out of the role of pointing out mistakes.
When children check their own answers, they see where they succeeded alongside where their thinking slipped. This simple metacognitive habit is linked by research to better long-term learning and a greater willingness to improve.
In case you do need to mark a paper yourself, try sitting down side-by-side. Look through the questions together at the table instead of taking the page away and returning it covered in red pen. That way, revision feels like a team effort as opposed to an inspection.
The exact words you use when a mistake crops up shape whether your child sees it as a dead end or a minor detour.
For example, imagine your child tackles a classic 11+ multi-step word problem:
"Maya buys 3 notebooks at £2.50 each and pays with a £10 note. How much change does she get?"
If your child writes down £7.50 (finding the total cost, but forgetting to subtract from £10), it is easy to react with frustration: "Why didn't you read the full question? We've done change problems five times this week!" That immediately puts a child on the defensive.
Instead, frame the error as a neutral puzzle piece: "Your calculation for the notebooks is spot on. Let's look together at where the last step went sideways."
This delivers the exact same feedback, but keeps the focus entirely on the method rather than your child's capability.
It pays to take the same careful approach with comparisons. Mentioning a sibling's pace or a classmate's practice scores, even as a lighthearted motivation attempt, tends to introduce comparison anxiety that gets in the way of the actual maths.
If your child can choose which topic to start with or whether to do the mixed review before or after the harder section, the content covered stays exactly the same. What changes is how they feel about sitting down to do it.
One line of research finds that when students feel they have even a small degree of control over how they work, their motivation and willingness to engage with the task tend to rise.
For example, a child who gets to decide, “Let’s do the word problems first and save the arithmetic practice for the end,” is typically more ready to lean into the session than one who is simply told what will happen and when.
When you wrap up a session right after a child struggles through the hardest question of the day, that lingering feeling of difficulty is what they take away with them.
Instead, save the final two or three minutes for a quick win. Pick a topic you know your child has already mastered, like a rapid-fire round of their favourite 7 times table or a quick place value puzzle they can solve with ease.
This small shift leaves your child with a feeling of accomplishment rather than frustration. More importantly, it completely changes how eager they are to sit down for the next session.
