As the school holidays draw to a close, many parents start to wonder: Is my child ready for the new school year in maths? Whether they’ve flown through times tables or found fractions frustrating, every child benefits from a confident return to class, especially in a subject as foundational as maths.

That’s why we’ve created this simple, year-by-year guide to help parents understand what’s expected at each stage of the UK curriculum from Year 2 through to Year 9. You’ll find key topics, vocabulary, and times tables milestones.

Year-by-Year Maths Guide

Year 2 (Age 6–7)

● Number bonds to 20 and related facts to 100

● Understanding place value up to 100

● Recall of 2, 5, and 10 times tables

● Begin telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes

● Basic fractions: ½, ¼, ⅓ of shapes and quantities

● Describe 2D and 3D shapes

Key Vocabulary: halves, quarters, place value, partition, odd/even, pence, o’clock


Year 3 (Age 7–8)

● Place value to 1,000

● Mental and written addition/subtraction

● Recall and use of 3, 4, and 8 times tables

● Begin understanding tenths and fractions of objects/numbers

● Bar charts and pictograms

Key Vocabulary: numerator, denominator, estimate, rounding, greater than/less than


Year 4 (Age 8–9)

● Place value up to 10,000 and beyond

● All times tables to 12 × 12 (Multiplication Tables Check takes place this year)

● Short multiplication and division

● Rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000

● Basic area and perimeter

● Identify angles and lines of symmetry

Key Vocabulary: factor, multiple, perpendicular, parallel, square number, symmetry


Year 5 (Age 9–10)

● Place value up to 1,000,000

● Long multiplication and short division

● Prime numbers, square, and cube numbers

● Fractions, decimals, percentage,s and equivalence

● Interpreting graphs and timetables

● Measuring angles, volum,e and area

Key Vocabulary: prime, composite, improper fraction, convert, metric units


Year 6 (Age 10–11)

● Consolidation of all arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

● Fractions to decimals and percentages conversion

● Ratio, proportion, and algebra introduced

● Coordinates in all four quadrants

● Pie charts, line graphs, and interpreting data

Key Vocabulary: algebra, ratio, proportion, BIDMAS, translation, coordinates


Years 7–9 (Key Stage 3 Overview)

● Algebra: expressions, equations, sequences

● Number: powers, roots, standard form

● Ratio and proportion: scaling, conversions, rates

● Geometry: angle rules, constructions, Pythagoras

● Statistics and probability: averages, sampling, probability scale

Key Vocabulary: linear equation, nth term, hypotenuse, mean/median/mode, frequency


Maths Milestones to Watch

Across all year groups, here are a few big markers parents can use to track progress:

● Times Tables: Aim for fluency in all tables by the end of Year 4

● Mental Maths: Encourage regular practice of rounding, number bonds, estimation

● Vocabulary: Children should be able to explain their maths thinking out loud using correct terms
