National Numbers Day: Play with Numbers at Home

Feb 6, 2026 | Blackheath

National Numbers Day, Friday 6th February 2026, is all about showing children that maths isn’t just about getting the right answer, it’s about thinking, exploring and making sense of numbers.

To celebrate, we’ve created a free downloadable activity you can use at home to help your child play with numbers in a relaxed, curiosity-led way.

Why “playing” with numbers matters

When children enjoy numbers, confidence follows. Activities that encourage thinking, rather than speed or memorisation, help children to:

  • Build confidence without pressure
  • Develop reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Explain their ideas clearly and logically
  • See maths as something they can do

That’s exactly what National Numbers Day is all about.

Our free “Playing with Numbers” activity

Our Playing with Numbers worksheet is designed to get children thinking, talking and exploring mathematical ideas.

The activities include:

  • Puzzles that encourage children to reason and estimate
  • Visual challenges that help children spot patterns and relationships
  • Simple prompts that ask children to explain their thinking, not just write an answer

There’s no timer, no trick questions and no pressure, just thoughtful maths that helps children see numbers differently.

How to use the activity at home

You don’t need to be a maths expert to support your child. A few simple tips:

  • Let your child talk through their ideas out loud
  • Ask questions like “How do you know?” or “What made you think that?”
  • If they get stuck, encourage them to try a different approach rather than rushing to the answer

Most families find the activity takes around 20–30 minutes and it works just as well alongside a parent as it does independently.
