Helping Students in Winchester Excel in Maths

At Mathnasium of Winchester, our specially trained instructors use the Mathnasium Method™ to help children build a deep understanding and long-term maths mastery. This proprietary teaching approach draws on personalised learning plans and a mix of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques, meeting each child at exactly the right point in their maths journey and moving them forward from there.

For children in a city with as many academically ambitious schools as Winchester, a solid maths foundation matters early. The Mathnasium Method™ is designed to build that foundation properly.

Our caring, specially trained instructors work with children from Year 1 through to GCSE at our centre on Parchment Street, right in the heart of Winchester city centre, and online via Mathnasium@home. Sessions take place in a supportive small-group environment, with each child following their own personalised learning plan.

Winchester is home to some highly regarded schools with competitive entry, and our instructors are experienced in helping children meet those demands, whether that means closing gaps, building confidence, or preparing for entrance assessments.

Every child at Mathnasium of Winchester begins with a diagnostic assessment that gives us a clear picture of their current skills and where the knowledge gaps lie. From that, we build a personalised learning plan that sets out exactly what needs to be worked on and in what order.

Progress is steady and deliberate, and each concept is built on the one before, so children are never pushed ahead before they are ready and never held back once they are.

  • Where is Mathnasium of Winchester located?

Mathnasium of Winchester is at 67B Parchment Street, Winchester SO23 8AT, a one-minute walk from the Butter Cross on the High Street, in the centre of the city. • What year groups does Mathnasium of Winchester work with?

Mathnasium of Winchester works with children from Year 1 through to GCSE, children aged 5 to 16, covering KS1 through to KS4.

Winchester has a broad mix of state primaries, independent prep schools, and competitive secondary options, and we work with pupils across all of those pathways. Whether your child is building early number skills or preparing for GCSE maths, there is a programme here that fits where they are.

  • What maths topics and subjects can your tutors in Winchester help with?

Our instructors cover maths from the early KS1 curriculum right through to GCSE, including number and place value, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, algebra, geometry, ratio and proportion, statistics and trigonometry.

Because sessions follow a personalised learning plan, the focus is always on the specific topics your child finds difficult rather than a fixed programme. For instance, a Year 2 child working on addition and subtraction gets something quite different from a Year 11 child consolidating their algebra ahead of mocks, but both are getting exactly what they need.

  • How is Mathnasium different from a private tutor?

Winchester has no shortage of private tutors, and it is a fair question. The difference at Mathnasium is in the structure.

Every child begins with a diagnostic assessment and works from a personalised learning plan designed to close knowledge gaps systematically.

Rather than responding to whatever comes up that week, our tutors follow the Mathnasium Method™ — a consistent, evidence-informed teaching approach used across 1,200+ centres worldwide.

Sessions take place in a fun small-group environment, which keeps children motivated and helps them see that they are not alone in finding maths challenging.

  • How do you teach maths? Which curriculum do you use?

We use the Mathnasium Method™, not a set curriculum. The approach is grounded in the idea that children learn maths best when it makes sense to them, when they can see why something works, not just how to execute it.

Our instructors use mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques in combination, guided by each pupil's personalised learning plan.

Our sessions can align with the National Curriculum so that what children work on here connects directly with what they are doing in school, while also addressing any gaps that classroom teaching, through no fault of anyone, may have left behind.

  • Do you work with advanced children or only the ones struggling with maths?

We work with children at every level, and a number of the families who come to us in Winchester are looking to give their child an academic edge rather than address a specific difficulty.

Winchester's independent and grammar school landscape means many children here are working towards competitive entry, subject scholarships, or simply want to be the most prepared pupil in the room. For them, we go beyond the school curriculum, deepening their understanding and developing the problem-solving ability that sets them apart.

For children who are finding maths hard, we work from what they already know, building steadily so that each new concept lands properly.

  • Do you prepare children for the 11+?

Yes! Mathnasium of Winchester supports children preparing for the 11+ and other entrance assessments, including those for Winchester's independent prep and senior schools. The local independent sector, including The Pilgrims' School, St Faith's, Kings' School and others, is competitive, and satisfactory maths performance is central to most of those admissions processes.

We recommend beginning preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, allowing time to build consistent numerical reasoning skills and work through the range of question types these exams include.

  • Do you offer GCSE maths tutoring?

Yes. Our instructors support Year 10 and Year 11 pupils with a personalised GCSE preparation plan built around their current level, target grade and the topics that need the most work. We cover the full GCSE maths curriculum across both Foundation and Higher tiers: number, algebra, geometry, ratio, probability and statistics.

Winchester pupils often come to us in the lead-up to mocks or when they receive results that suggest a specific area needs attention. Either way, we build a plan that makes the remaining preparation as efficient as possible.

  • Do you prepare children for SATs®?

Yes. We support Year 6 children preparing for their KS2 SATs® maths papers across both the Arithmetic and Reasoning components. As with all our exam preparation, the work is guided by a personalised learning plan rather than a generic revision programme, so the focus is on the specific topics each pupil needs to strengthen.

We can also support Year 4 children ahead of the Multiplication Tables Check and Year 2 children working towards their KS1 assessments.

  • How much does maths tutoring cost at Mathnasium of Winchester?

Tuition at Mathnasium of Winchester is priced as a flat monthly membership fee. How many sessions per week we recommend will depend on your child's personalised learning plan. Most pupils attend two to three times a week, though this varies.

For current pricing, contact us at [email protected] or call 0196 2706 436.

  • How can I enrol my child at Mathnasium of Winchester?

Get in touch using the Contact Us button on this page or by emailing [email protected]. We will arrange a diagnostic assessment at a time that suits you. The assessment will be the starting point, giving us the information we need to build your child's personalised learning plan.

We will then walk you through the results and the plan we have put together, and answer any questions before your child starts their sessions.
