Winchester student gains confidence after Mathnasium support

A young student has transformed her outlook on maths after struggling with the subject.

Lottie, 11, from Winchester had previously lacked confidence in maths before starting sessions at Mathnasium Winchester, a maths-only learning centre that takes a personalised approach to building understanding and skills.

James Kirk, centre director at Mathnasium of Winchester, said: "Lottie joined Mathnasium Winchester in 2025.

"Since starting to do more maths at school, like many pupils, Lottie found maths increasingly difficult.

"Confidence was the biggest barrier for Lottie.

"She had plenty of mathematical knowledge, but believing in herself enough to put it down on paper was a real struggle."

He explained that Lottie’s parents were seeking extra support as she approached the end of primary school and prepared for her SATs.

Mr Kirk said: "Her parents wanted to make sure she had the support to reach her potential, particularly with SATs on the horizon."

The team at Mathnasium developed a tailored learning plan to address the areas where Lottie felt less confident, starting with foundational concepts and gradually introducing more advanced material.

Mr Kirk said: "By meeting Lottie exactly where she was, we built a custom learning plan targeting the specific areas she needed to work on."

When Lottie began at Mathnasium, she was a couple of years behind where she needed to be, but she has since made "fantastic progress" and is now very close to being fully caught up.

Her mother, Lynsey, credits the centre’s nurturing environment for much of her progress.

She said: "It is no coincidence that the kind, caring and inspiring support that Mathnasium’s excellent team provide has allowed Lottie to feel safe and empowered to grow confidently, not just in terms of mathematical ability, but as a wonderful little person too.

"Mathnasium provides so much more than maths tutoring, and we really are grateful to each and every one of you."

Mr Kirk added: "Lottie's story is a wonderful example of what can happen when a child begins to truly understand maths.

"We often see that confidence grows alongside ability, and that can have a positive impact across all areas of school life.

"When students understand maths, they gain more than skills, they gain confidence.

"The summer is the perfect time to get ahead and set the stage for September’s starting at secondary school with confidence."
