Scientific Notation: How to Read, Write, and Convert Small and Large Numbers

In 2024, the SAT® changed to a fully digital format. It is now shorter and adjusts to each student's performance as they go. Students take it on a laptop or tablet through the College Board's Bluebook app.
The math section looks like this:
44 questions across two 35-minute modules
Four content domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry
Calculators permitted on every question, including a built-in Desmos graphing tool loaded directly into the app
No paper test booklet, no separate no-calculator section
The four domains describe what math topics are tested. The two modules describe how those questions are delivered. Each module draws from all four domains, but the difficulty level changes between them based on how the student performs.
The math section is split into two modules. Module 1 presents a mix of difficulty levels. How a student performs on Module 1 determines which version of Module 2 they receive:
Great performance on Module 1 unlocks a harder Module 2
A harder Module 2 opens access to higher score bands
For students targeting competitive programs, performing well early raises the ceiling on what final score is possible
If your child's prep materials use different terminology than what they see on the College Board website, they are still covering the same content.
Many prep books and online resources still use the old SAT® naming conventions. Heart of Algebra, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math all map directly onto the four current content domains.

The SAT® math section is organized into four content domains.
Together, they cover the math most students have already encountered in high school, from Algebra 1 through Geometry and Algebra 2.

Algebra is tied with Advanced Math as the largest domain on the exam and draws directly from Algebra 1 content. Good results here have an outsized effect on the overall score.
Topics include:
Linear equations in one and two variables
Solving single-variable linear equations, evaluating absolute value equations, and manipulating expressions to isolate specific variables
Building linear models from contextual descriptions to represent fixed costs, unit rates, or real-world constraints
Systems of two linear equations
Finding point solutions (x,y) algebraically through substitution or elimination, as well as visually identifying the point of intersection on a coordinate plane
Recognizing system conditions that produce no solution or infinitely many solutions
Linear functions and coordinate geometry
Calculating slope, identifying x- and y-intercepts, and evaluating function notation f(x) under linear transformations
Interpreting the practical real-world meaning of slope (rate of change) and y-intercept (initial value) within a scenario
Linear inequalities in one or two variables
Solving single-variable inequalities and flipping inequality signs when multiplying/dividing by negative numbers
Graphing two-variable inequalities, identifying shaded solution regions, and determining valid coordinate points within a system of inequalities
For students in Irving ISD, CFBISD, and Coppell ISD, this content maps directly onto TEKS standards covered in 8th and 9th grade math. Most local students have seen all of it in class.
The challenge on the SAT® is applying it efficiently under time pressure, often in the context of word problems that require careful reading before any calculation.

Advanced Math represents the most difficult material on the test. This domain focuses primarily on concepts taught in Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus, evaluating a test-taker's ability to manipulate abstract equations, analyze non-linear functions, and solve complex multi-step problems.
Unlike basic algebra, where quick visual inspection or standard estimation often works, Advanced Math requires structural fluency, symbolic reasoning, and strategic algebraic manipulation under timed conditions.

Distinguishing between constant rate-of-change and percentage rate-of-change behavior
Function notation, operations, and transformations
Evaluating composite functions, calculating inverse functions, and understanding how transformations shift or reflect graphs visually
Non-linear systems of equations
Solving systems containing a linear equation and a quadratic or circular equation, either algebraically or visually by finding points of intersection
A score above 700 on SAT® Math is expected for Las Colinas students targeting STEM programs at UTD, UT Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering, or SMU's Lyle School of Engineering. Advanced Math is the domain that most directly determines whether that score is reached.
Problem Solving and Data Analysis is the most practical and applied domain on the exam.
Instead of testing raw algebraic speed or abstract formulas, these questions evaluate how well students process real-world information, read statistical data, and translate word problems into actionable math.
Topics are:
Ratios, rates, percentages, and unit conversions
Calculating proportions, direct/inverse variation, scale factors, and speed-distance-time relationships
Performing multi-step unit conversions
Solving percent increases/decreases, sales discounts, compound growth, and multi-step percentage changes
Scatter plots and linear/exponential models
Interpreting lines of best fit, identifying positive or negative correlations, and understanding what slopes and y-intercepts represent in real-world contexts
Estimating data points and distinguishing between linear growth and exponential growth
Statistics, distributions, and data tables
Evaluating measures of center and measures of spread
Understanding how outliers pull the mean away from the median. Reading two-way tables, relative frequencies, and bar charts
Probability and statistical inference
Calculating single-event and conditional probabilities from data sets or two-way tables
Evaluating sample sizes, understanding margin of error, and determining whether a study's conclusions can be generalized to a broader population
The challenge lies in translating the narrative into the correct expression. Students who struggle with complex, multi-step algebra can score well here by working methodically, double-checking units, and rereading every prompt.
Geometry and Trigonometry covers shapes, angles, and basic trigonometry. It is a smaller share of the test, but the questions in this domain tend to confuse students who haven't reviewed the material since middle school.
However, because the underlying rules are fixed, reviewing these foundational shapes and ratios offers a quick, predictable way to earn points.
Topics in this domain include:
Area and volume calculations
Calculating the area of 2D shapes and the volume of 3D solids
Working with scaled dimensions and understanding how multiplying side lengths affects area or volume
Right triangles and trigonometry
Circle geometry and equations
Lines, angles, and triangles
Evaluating angle relationships formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal
Knowing that the interior angles of a triangle and applying similar triangle proportional ratios
The Bluebook app provides a formula reference sheet during the test, which means memorizing formulas is less important than knowing when and how to apply them.
