Why Maths Confidence Matters Beyond the Grade (A Guide for Altrincham Parents)
Mathnasium's education specialists explain what grades miss about maths and why building your child's maths confidence matters just as much as the mark.
Parents preparing their children for the Trafford 11+ now have an additional factor to consider when deciding when to start. From 2029 entry onwards, children will take the entrance assessment in Year 5 rather than at the beginning of Year 6, bringing the assessment forward by several months.
However, the amount of preparation your child needs also depends on their current maths understanding and the skills they have yet to develop. An earlier start may give your child more time to build those skills, but it doesn't mean every child needs formal 11+ preparation at the same age.
We'll look at how the Trafford 11+ timetable affects different year groups, which maths skills to focus on, how to assess your child's preparation needs and where Altrincham families can find useful resources.
The Trafford 11+ is an entrance assessment used by five selective grammar schools in Trafford to determine whether children meet their academic entry requirements for Year 7.
Together, they form the Trafford Grammar School Consortium and use a shared entrance test, so children only need to take the assessment once:
Each school has its own admissions criteria. Other local selective schools, including Loreto Grammar School and Saint Ambrose College, have separate entrance assessments and admissions arrangements.
For September 2028 entry onwards, the consortium is replacing GL Assessment with Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE). Instead of the previous assessment covering verbal, non-verbal and mathematical reasoning, the new test will draw on the Key Stage 2 English and maths national curriculum up to the end of Year 5.
With the change, the consortium aims to make selective testing more accessible and reduce reliance on intensive external tutoring.

The Trafford 11+ has no officially prescribed starting age for preparation. Your child's current year group determines how much time remains before the assessment, while their existing maths knowledge can help you decide what they need to work on during that time.
Children currently in Year 5 will take the assessment at the beginning of Year 6, under the current timetable. For those currently in Years 3 and 4, the revised arrangements apply from September 2029 entry onwards, bringing the assessment forward to the latter part of Year 5.

| Year 5 | September 2028 | September 2027, beginning of Year 6 |
| Year 4 | September 2029 | Latter part of summer term 2028, in Year 5 |
| Year 3 | September 2030 | Latter part of summer term 2029, in Year 5 |
The timetable reflects the consortium's announced arrangements as of autumn 2026. Families should confirm exact future assessment dates through the relevant grammar schools' admissions information.
Depending on your child's current year group, you can prioritise the following:
Year 5: The priority is to review which maths concepts your child understands and which need further attention. Their recent schoolwork and teacher feedback can help you identify specific areas to work on first, so you can make the most of the time before the September 2027 assessment.
Year 4: Your child has less time to prepare than previous cohorts because they'll take the assessment before finishing Year 5. You can use this school year to check their progress in maths and decide whether to begin additional preparation now or continue building skills through regular schoolwork.
Year 3: There is more time to develop mathematical understanding gradually. Regular practice with number relationships, calculations and problem-solving can provide a useful foundation without introducing formal exam preparation too soon.

Maths preparation for the Trafford 11+ should focus on the Key Stage 2 national curriculum up to the end of Year 5, as outlined in the Department for Education's mathematics programmes of study.
Regardless of the assessment date, the same curriculum scope applies to both the first FSCE assessment and later cohorts.
Parents can focus on four broad areas when reviewing the maths their child needs to know.
| Maths skill area | Skills to focus on |
| Number and calculation | Place value, times tables, mental and written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, rounding and estimation |
| Fractions, decimals and percentages | Equivalent fractions, fractions of quantities, decimal place value, comparisons between decimals and percentages such as 25%, 50% and 75% |
| Measurement, geometry and statistics | Units of measurement and conversions, perimeter and area, properties of shapes, angles, coordinates, tables and graphs |
| Mathematical problem-solving | Identify relevant information, choose appropriate operations, solve multi-step problems and check whether answers are reasonable |
Beyond carrying out calculations accurately, children also need to understand how to connect and use different mathematical ideas when solving problems. They may know the methods but struggle to choose which ones to use when a problem involves several steps or combines different topics.
Children can develop their mathematical reasoning through practice with such problems and become more confident in deciding how to approach unfamiliar questions.
Our four areas provide a practical overview rather than an exhaustive curriculum checklist. Parents can refer to the Year 3, 4 and 5 programmes of study for the full range of maths content, including more detailed requirements for statistics and data interpretation.

Your child's preparation needs depend on how securely they understand the relevant maths and whether they can use that knowledge to solve problems.
Four practical checks can help you decide what to focus on:
Review recent schoolwork and teacher feedback. Look for topics where your child makes repeated mistakes, needs frequent reminders or finds it difficult to explain their answers. Teacher feedback can help you distinguish an occasional error from a concept that needs more attention.
Check how your child approaches maths problems. As you review their work, pay attention to whether they understand what a question is asking, can choose an appropriate method and explain how they reached their answer. Difficulty at any of these stages may indicate that they need more guidance with mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
Consider how your child is progressing with practice. Over time, your child may become more independent with similar problems and need fewer reminders or explanations. Continued reliance on the same prompts can suggest that their understanding needs further attention, even if they sometimes reach the correct answer.
Decide whether additional support would help. Your child's progress, school feedback and the time remaining before the assessment can help you decide whether regular practice is sufficient or structured maths support would be more appropriate.
Where the underlying difficulties remain unclear, teachers or maths specialists can use a more detailed assessment to identify what your child already understands and which concepts need further teaching.

Altrincham families can use official admissions guidance, test familiarisation materials and local resources to support their child's Trafford 11+ preparation.
Here are some useful options:
Altrincham Grammar School for Boys' admissions information provides guidance on entrance assessments, eligibility and how places are allocated. Families should check the admissions arrangements for their child's intended year of entry.
Trafford Council's admission outcomes show how places were allocated at local secondary schools, including Trafford's grammar schools. Previous results can help families understand admissions categories, although they do not predict future offers.
FSCE provides information about its entrance assessments. Families should use Trafford-specific familiarisation materials when published, as resources for other schools may not reflect the consortium's assessment.
Altrincham Library offers children's books, computers and free Wi-Fi. Families can also search the Trafford Libraries catalogue and reserve relevant maths books from across the library network.
Mathnasium of Altrincham helps children prepare for the maths demands of the Trafford 11+, including the mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills needed for selective entrance assessments.
Start with your chosen school's admissions requirements and the materials available for your child's assessment. You can then select additional maths resources that suit their current knowledge and preparation needs.

We use those insights to create a bespoke learning plan that addresses gaps, builds on existing knowledge and provides greater challenge where appropriate.
Teaching for understanding. Our specially trained instructors teach children how and why maths works rather than simply asking them to memorise methods. They use mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to explain concepts in different ways and develop mathematical thinking.
Face-to-face instruction. Children work face-to-face with specially trained instructors and follow their own learning plan at a pace that suits them. Families can choose between in-centre and live online instruction, depending on the options available through their centre.
11+ maths preparation and confidence. Children strengthen their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills through guided practice that builds on their existing knowledge. Instructors help them work through challenging questions and develop confidence in their approach.
