Pi Day at Mathnasium of Winchester: Let’s Get Mathematical!

Mar 8, 2026 | Winchester

It’s officially our favourite time of year in Winchester! The 14th of March (3.14) is just around the corner, and you know what that means: it’s time to celebrate the most famous constant in the universe, Pi!

At Mathnasium, we love Pi Day because it’s the perfect reminder that maths isn't just about worksheets; it’s a living, breathing part of our world. From the coins in your pocket to the orbits of the planets, Pi is everywhere.

What Exactly is Pi?

For the uninitiated, Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference (C) to its diameter (d). No matter how big or small the circle is, if you divide the distance around it by the distance across it, you always get the same magical number:

Pi = C/d ≈ 3.14 or 22/7

Because Pi is an irrational number, its digits go on forever without ever repeating a pattern. It is an infinite mystery that has fascinated humans for thousands of years.

From Mars to Masterpieces

Pi isn't just for textbooks. NASA uses it to calculate the size of parachutes needed to land rovers on Mars and to navigate spacecraft around Saturn. But it’s not all rocket science, artists use the digits of Pi to create stunning "data art," turning those infinite numbers into beautiful visual patterns and musical scales. Whether it's helping a probe talk to Earth or helping an architect design a dome, Pi reminds us that maths is the language of the universe.

Join Our Pi Day Party!

We’re turning our Winchester centre into a hub of circular celebration. Pi Day is the perfect moment to step outside the classroom and see the wonder in the numbers. We’d love for you and your family to join us for the festivities!
