Year 7 Maths: What Changes in Secondary School?

In England, Year 7 starts a new stage of your child’s maths education, which can bring plenty of questions about what will change from primary school and what they will be expected to do.

With those questions in mind, we’ve taken a closer look at how maths develops from KS2 into KS3.

What Can Your Child Expect From Year 7 Maths?

In Year 7, your child can expect to build on their KS2 maths while making more connections between the mathematical ideas they already know. This reflects the DfE’s KS3 mathematics programme, which describes maths as an interconnected subject.

For the move into Year 7, guidance from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) focuses on how students can build on their Year 6 learning in areas such as place value, additive and multiplicative structures, fractions and geometric properties. 

Let’s look more closely at three areas where the DfE curriculum shows how learning from Year 6 develops further at KS3. Schools may sequence this content differently across the key stage. 

  • Fractions connect with a wider number system. By the end of Year 6, students work with fractions, decimals and percentages and recognise the relationships between them. At KS3, they move between fractions and terminating decimals, interpret fractions and percentages as operators and continue developing their calculations with rational numbers.

  • Ratio and proportion become more formal. Year 6 introduces proportionality through problems involving relative quantities, scale factors and unequal sharing. KS3 extends and formalises this work as students use ratio notation, relate ratios to fractions and explore proportional relationships in numerical, graphical and algebraic forms.

  • Algebra develops from familiar mathematical relationships. In Year 6, students solve problems involving unknown values and use simple formulae. KS3 develops this into more formal work with algebraic expressions, equations, formulae and relationships between variables.

Your child’s readiness to take these ideas further is closely linked to how securely they understand the maths underneath them. The DfE suggests progression should reflect students’ security of understanding and readiness to progress, with further consolidation where earlier material is not yet fluent.

Why Can Year 7 Maths Become More Challenging?

Year 7 maths can become more challenging as students are expected to use their mathematical knowledge across a wider range of problems and situations. The DfE includes reasoning and problem solving alongside fluency as central aims of the mathematics curriculum.

We can see what those expectations require from students in several ways.

  1. Students need to recognise the same maths in different forms. At KS3, students apply their maths to routine and non-routine problems and move between different mathematical representations. This means they need to recognise the same mathematical idea when it appears in another form. For example, the same percentage may appear as 25%, 0.25 or one quarter (14), and students need to realise that these forms represent the same value. 

  2. Gaps can affect more than one topic. Maths is cumulative, so later concepts may draw on knowledge students developed earlier. Gaps in multiplication, for example, can affect later work with fractions, ratio and algebra because each area draws on multiplicative relationships. Your child may then be working through the earlier maths while also trying to understand the new concept.

  3. Students make more mathematical decisions. KS3 problem-solving asks students to choose suitable strategies, decide which information they need and break problems into manageable steps. Your child gradually takes more responsibility for working through a problem independently, which can be more demanding when several choices need to be made along the way. 

Where a difficulty appears may not tell us where it begins. The Year 7 topic your child finds difficult may be only the point where an earlier gap becomes harder to work around. 

So the challenging topic is a useful first clue, but the maths your child relies on to solve it may show where the difficulty really begins.

How Can You Support Your Child With Maths in Secondary School?

You can support your child with the transition to secondary school by staying informed about their maths, listening to what they find challenging and keeping in touch with their teacher. 

Maths in secondary school covers far too much for parents to assess topic by topic, so a realistic approach is to focus on what you can learn from school and what your child shares with you.

Here are four practical ways to do that:

  1. Keep track of what they are learning at school. Your child’s school may provide a curriculum map, homework platform or other information about the maths being covered. Schools can organise KS3 content differently, so their own curriculum information gives you the most relevant starting point for supporting current work.

  2. Listen to how your child talks about their maths. Ask them what they are working on and how they approached it. You may hear that the same area is confusing, that they understand a calculation but struggle to decide when to use it or that a particular step regularly causes trouble. Those conversations can give you something specific to follow up.

  3. Bring recurring concerns to their maths teacher. Share what your child has been finding challenging and compare it with what the teacher sees in lessons. Then, their teacher can give you a broader picture of how your child is progressing and suggest areas where additional practice or support may help.
